Newham Libraries: A Library of Sanctuary
At Newham Libraries, we are proud to be part of the Libraries of Sanctuary movement. This means we are committed to providing a safe, welcoming, and inclusive space for everyone – especially people who have been forced to flee their homes and are seeking sanctuary in the UK.
Whether you are newly arrived in Newham or have lived here for years, our libraries are open to all. We believe everyone has the right to feel safe, respected, and part of the community.
What is a Library of Sanctuary?
A Library of Sanctuary is a place where people seeking sanctuary – including refugees and asylum seekers – are welcomed, supported, and valued. Libraries of Sanctuary celebrate diversity, promote understanding, and offer practical help to those rebuilding their lives in a new country.
We are proud to stand in solidarity with sanctuary seekers and are working with local partners to ensure our libraries remain inclusive, accessible spaces for all.

Support and Partnerships
Our staff receive training to better understand the challenges faced by sanctuary seekers and how to offer sensitive, informed support. We work with a range of local organisations to connect people with specialist services, advice, and community groups.
If you work with or support people seeking sanctuary and would like to collaborate, we’d love to hear from you.
